FAQs - PEP

Frequently asked questions for the Professional English Programme. Information for non EU clients:

Can I just do the unpaid internship only?
No. For Non EU students we have designed a sandwich course (PEP) that will allow you to do the internship without having to apply for a work permit. You will need to get clearance as a student to take part in the programme. The programme has 4 options, so you can choose the option most suited to you.
How long in advance do I need to enrol?
You need to book at least 2 weeks in advance (with full payment for the programme). In summer we would like to have at least 4 weeks notice.
Can I extend my placement/my stay, once I am in the UK?

It is very difficult to extend your visa once you are in the UK. You can book an additional course with us, but you will have to apply to the Home office for an extension of your stay.

For further information on immigration issues please consult: www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk and www.oisc.org.uk

Will I know the company details before I leave for England?
When you do a PEP course, you will first be doing the study component first. You will usually not yet know the placement before travelling to the UK. But don’t worry, once we have confirmed your booking, a placement is guaranteed.
Do I need a VISA?

You can find out from http://ukvisas.gov.uk if you need a visa before leaving your country. You can also contact the English embassy or consulate in your country for this information.

What kind of visa or entry clearance do I need?

You need to get a student visa with a restriction to work, or an entry certificate as a student (rather than a visitor). Only this will allow you to undertake a placement as part of your course.

For more information about visas and working in the UK as a NON EU student visit: http://www.ukcosa.org.uk

What documents will you send me to get my visa or entry clearance?
When we have received your booking and deposit, we will issue you with your certificate of enrolment. This should be enough to apply for a visa or an entry certificate. You will also need to give an address of where you are going to live in the UK. If you book a host family with Twin, we will also provide you with the address.
What if I don’t get my Visa – will you refund the programme fees?
We will keep your deposit, but we will refund all other course and accommodation fees, if you haven’t made use of any of these yet.
I am a NON EU national and I don’t need a visa, I go through entry clearance at the border, what happens if I don’t get student status but just tourist clearance?

It depends on the circumstances on your arrival, but we will assist you to find the best solution for you.

I have a stamp in my passport, but it doesn’t say I am a student, how do I know it is a student visa and that I am allowed to do my internship?
You can find advice on this by either visiting either of the following websites: http://www.ukcosa.org.uk/pages/advice.htm or http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk – choose the immigration and nationality directorate and then choose employers information / UK passport stamps.
